Hamish McDonald: Millions of faithful refuse to toe China’s official line

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

Fang Yune is one of millions of Catholics in China following guidance from the Vatican, but until yesterday she had not heard about the death of Pope John Paul.

“You are the first to tell me about it,” said Mrs Fang, a self-described “old granny” living in Liugou, a small village in a region of coalmines, quarries and rock-strewn fields about 400 kilometres south of Beijing. “I don’t know how to express my feelings – I feel disturbed, and hope he can be raised to heaven soon.”
