China reported its first confirmed cases of people falling ill with bird flu Wednesday, saying the disease had spread from infected fowl to human beings in at least two areas.
The announcement, from the Agriculture Ministry via the official New China News Agency, marked a recognition of the failure to prevent the disease from migrating into people despite strenuous efforts over the last several months to contain a dozen outbreaks in chicken, ducks and geese on farms around the country.
