In the wake of further bird flu outbreaks in China, U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said yesterday in Shanghai that global cooperation is needed to control the impact of a possible avian flu pandemic.
“When you are thirsty it is too late to dig the well,” Mineta said quoting an old Chinese proverb during a speech to the American Chamber of Commerce.
After discussing the importance of transportation security and safety in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, Mineta told the audience at the Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel that a new threat to global commerce is the “specter” of the avian flu pandemic.
