Nineteen Chinese AIDS patients have been awarded more than $2 million in compensation in a landmark lawsuit hailed by rights campaigners.The 19 patients were infected by contaminated blood transfusions. Their award of 20 million yuan ($2.5 million) in compensation represents the biggest legal case of its kind in China.
Fifteen of the patients were infected while undergoing operations at a hospital in northern China’s Heilongjiang province in 2004. Three of them subsequently passed the HIV virus on to their spouses. Another patient later unwittingly infected her five-year-old child, bringing the total number of victims to 19.
The patients are all said to be living in poverty. One has died. [Full Text]
