From Keralanext:
Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party has picked former Premier Frank Hsieh, who is seen as more eager to improve ties with arch rival China, to run for the presidency next year.
The party made the decision after Hsieh clinched a surprise victory on Sunday in the first phase of the DPP’s primary, beating hot favorite Premier Su Tseng-chang. Su then announced he was pulling out of the race.
Hsieh obtained 45 percent of the vote, while Su took about 33 percent, according to final figures from the DPP.
The result of the vote would have accounted for 30 percent of any candidate’s final score in the primary, while the remaining 70 percent was to be determined by public opinion polls.[Full Text]
