Ministry of Tofu has translated an infographic from CNpolitics.org which illustrates the dominance of state-owned enterprises among China’s largest companies. The largest private Chinese company, Huawei, ranks just 39th overall in terms of revenue, generating less than a tenth as much as Sinopec, the largest SOE. But in other respects, private companies run rings around the ponderous giants, holding twice as many patents and producing 75% and 80% of technological innovations and new products, respectively. The graphic also shows the different classes of SOEs, their changing financial relationship with the state, and the effects of government monopolies on prices of goods from fuel to broadband.
