Scenes from HK Education Protest

Over the weekend, Hong Kong parents, students and teachers protested the addition of patriotism classes to the fall curriculum. Below are photos and video screen captures from the demonstration:

“Mommy says people who force kids to lie are bad eggs.”

“I want to do something good for Hong Kong.

“I don’t want the world

“to become very bad in the future.”

Ho Zaak Lung, fifth grader:

“Textbooks that teach us wrong information

“force you to love the Party. It’s not that I can’t love my country,

“but I really can’t love the Party

“because the Party is horrible.

“They murder students and are very greedy.

“I refuse to help them.”

“We should be good citizens with brains, not brainwashed robots.”

The term “brainwashing” is now censored from Weibo search results.

Left: “I want to learn Chinese, I don’t want to be brainwashed!” Right: “You want me to love my country, but you won’t teach me Chinese right!”

Wong Hak Lim, Vice-President of the Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union:

“Teaching is our calling,

“so going on strike

“is not something we talk about lightly.

“But if we find that

“The government is interfering in Hong Kong education

“and our next generation is persecuted by brainwashing education

“teachers can go on strike.”
