China is becoming increasingly aware of the demands unsustainable development will place on its environment and the impact that can have on its own economy and the world. But lax regulations and weak enforcement still bedevil its environmental policy says Peter Navarro, author of “The Coming China Wars.”
Q: Your book is titled, “The Coming China Wars.” But does the word “war” mean that this is something that can be won?
A: The hyper rapid growth of the Chinese economy is putting it into a series of economic conflicts with the rest of the world and in China. These conflicts are wars because of their likely intensity; some of them can spill over to military violence. Internally there are “wars” within China. The pollution alone is going to create a health care crisis. The demographic in China works against the country’s development as China faces a rapidly aging population. Both China and the United States are living beyond their means. Neither model is acceptable or good for the countries. [Full Text]
