Police alert as Chinese reformer dies

Af0117-05 From The Age: “Police and security agents were out in force in Beijing yesterday to block political gatherings after the death of , the Communist Party leader who opposed the use of troops against activists in Tiananmen Square more than 15 years ago.

Mr Zhao, who was 85, died early yesterday morning in a Beijing hospital after a series of strokes. He had been in a coma since Friday. The official Xinhua news agency confirmed his death in a terse two-paragraph report a few hours later.”
