Taiwan’s opposition leader has pledged to force the government to work towards direct transport links with China, in an attempt to grab the initiative on a policy the island’s president is also counting on to regain support.Ma Ying-jeou, chairman and presidential hopeful of the Kuomintang (KMT), the island’s largest opposition party, said the KMT would use the opposition’s legislative majority to abolish legal restrictions on direct transport links with China. If the government then still refused to open direct links, the party would seek a referendum on the issue, Mr Ma said in a local newspaper interview.
