After the trial of Uyghur scholar Ilham Tohti for separatism last week, the Urumqi court announced an unexpectedly heavy sentence on Tuesday: life imprisonment. Xinhua’s Chinese-language wire copy on the sentencing has been widely reprinted by the news media in China.
Since directives are sometimes communicated orally to journalists and editors, who then leak them online, the wording published here may not be exact.
