From the Reuters: “China has stepped up controls on dissidents in an attempt to prevent public mourning for ousted Communist Party chief Zhao Ziyang, whose death on Monday has sparked fears among the leadership of possible unrest.
Several democracy campaigners and the mother of a victim of the army crackdown on the 1989 democracy protests on Tiananmen Square said authorities had prevented them from paying respects to Zhao, who was toppled for sympathising with the demonstrators.
‘Plainclothes police came. I cannot go out and the media cannot come to my home,’ said Ding Zilin, a retired People’s University professor whose son was among hundreds killed in the June 3-4 army crackdown that ended the movement.”
