A journalist who reported on alleged corruption among county officials in the central Chinese province of Hunan has been convicted on blackmail charges by a local court and sentenced to one year in prison, his wife and lawyer said yesterday.
Yang Xiaoqing is the latest in a long series of journalists jailed after drawing the ire of powerful officials in China, where government and Communist party cadres have considerable influence over the courts.
Even provincial police authorities have questioned the case against Mr Yang, accused of fabricating corruption stories in an attempt to blackmail the government of Hunan’s Longhui County.
