Chris Buckley: Avian flu fears heightened in China

From The International Herald Tribune:

A World Health Organization official said on Wednesday that China is working to isolate outbreaks of avian flu in the west of the country and investigating claims that Chinese farmers misused human anti-viral drugs to fight the disease among poultry. But he stressed that health officials remain concerned about the potentially lethal spread and evolution of the disease across China and the rest of Asia.

Experts from the World Health Organization, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization and several Chinese ministries traveled to Qinghai Province in western China on Monday to investigate an outbreak there that killed more than 1,000 migratory birds. They will end their visit by Friday, Henk Bekedam, the world health body’s representative in Beijing, said in an interview.
