Outside Beijing is a factory where hundreds of workers practise an old Chinese craft: painting on glass.

The factory is owned and run by an American company and the pictures are not scenes of pagodas but mangers: the artisans are making exquisite Christmas decorations for boutiques in New York and London.

Nowadays they are mere baubles on the Christmas tree of Chinese manufacturing. It is possible that every item under your tree on Monday, from grandma’s shawl to the latest teenage gadget, will have been shipped from Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other Chinese ports.
