Thai riot police officers used a cheap Chinese tear gas, which contained an explosive powerful enough to rip craters in the ground, to disperse crowds of antigovernment protesters last week, an investigator said Monday. The finding by forensics experts and a human rights commission may explain why three protesters died and several others had limbs and feet blown off during clashes last week with the police, who insisted that they had fired only tear gas to disperse the crowd.
