梁书记 (Liáng Shūjì): Secretary Leung

Nickname for Leung Chun-ying (梁振英), who became the Chief Executive and President of the Executive Council of Hong Kong in 2012. There is speculation that Leung is a closeted member of the Chinese Communist Party.

Secretary is a high position in the Chinese Communist Party. For example, the mayor of a Chinese city is also that city’s municipal Communist Party Committee secretary.

A few quips following Leung’s election from Weibo:

Congratulations, Secretary Leung. I hope you won’t forget to pay your party fees!

祝贺梁书记!希望梁书记,记得交党费!

Congratulations, Hong Kong, on officially joining the Celestial Empire. Secretary Leung will start rolling in the cash now.

恭贺香港正式加入天朝,梁书记财源滚滚

The Word of the Week comes from China Digital Space’s Grass-Mud Horse Lexicon, a glossary of terms created by Chinese netizens and frequently encountered in online political discussions. These are the words of China’s online “resistance discourse,” used to mock and subvert the official language around censorship and political correctness.
