People’s Daily Online had an interesting OP-ED piece: “Developed countries feature a social structure of an “Olive shape”, which is smaller on both ends yet swelled up in the middle due to the existence of a large number of a middle class. What is the specific feature of the social structure in China? As there is so far no large number of a middle-class in China and the majority of the people are under the middle class, so experts described the social structure metaphorically to be of an “Onion shape”. ”
