China has selected two pandas to give to Hong Kong as an anniversary gift, 10 years after the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule.
The pair, a male and a female who have yet to be named, will arrive in Hong Kong by the beginning of May, the State Forestry Administration said on Tuesday.
The pandas will have two months to acclimatize to their new surroundings before the handover anniversary on July 1. The hope is that the fertile, healthy and beautiful pair will breed in their new home, the administration has said.
The central government in Beijing has attached great importance to the anniversary and China’s president and premier are expected to attend ceremonies to mark the handover. [Full Text]
